Photo Friday

This is our week!
I found an acorn last fall. It was slightly cracked open and the tender tree had begun to germinate. Just the tiniest little hint of a sapling. I brought it in the house and put it in a pot with some dirt. I watered it every week and it did nothing. Twice, I almost gave up on it and threw it outside, but curiosity got the best of me and I decided I would give it till spring. About two weeks ago it started growing! The little brown nubbin turned green and within days it had formed these leaves! It's amazing that even though this acorn was in the temperature controlled house, it knew it was spring.

My Mother-in-law Kathy knitted this adorable sweater vest for our nephew Benjamin. The bunny's tail is almost like a terrycloth yarn. It's raised and fluffy just like a real bunny tail.

The Sandhill Cranes Return and other Nature Shots

Here is a collection of photos of the Sandhill Cranes that have returned to our area. It's my goal this year to capture a photo of a chick. They're such amazing birds.

We've also had a Red Tail Hawk in our yard for the past week or two. One of my favorite predator birds... Have to keep an eye on the chickens though...

Bird Spotting

Lately I've been loving all the wildlife returning to our area. It's a wonderful excuse for me to get my camera out and capture some of what's going on. Last year I participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. I reported on a sighting of Common Mergansers that we spotted at a local lake. A member from the lab contacted me and told me that this was an unusually high number of Mergansers for that area, for this time of year. He asked if I could provide photos of the birds along with my submission.

This year the birds were back, so I was sure to photograph all that I could!

Photo Friday

It's so wonderful to be able to spend time outside without dressing in 800 layers! We've been enjoying the migrating birds showing up in our yard. We've also tapped the maple trees (post coming soon) and will have our first boil this weekend. Here's our week.

Turkeys in the Cornfield

There's a cornfield near our house that always has a beautiful sprinkling of Wild Turkeys and Whitetail Deer. I had my camera on me the other night so I snapped a few photos.
