On May 10th we saw a new bird on our property for the first time. I thought it was a Wood Duck, which we have by the tens and twenties every year on the ponds. But this duck looked more like a Loon. I grabbed the binoculars and realized that the female had a fan on the back of it's head. After looking it up in our bird identification book we discovered it was a Hooded Merganser. The book describes them as "Uncommon" as they prefer to nest in wooded pond areas, rather than lakes that are more open.
