Chickens Take the Poll

Picture from "The American Livestock Breed Conservancy" Website
So it would seem we have a lot of chicken lovers out there. Last week's poll question; If you could only raise one farm animal, chickens were overwhelmingly in 1st place, followed by bees, goats, and pigs in a tie for second. With this in mind, I'd like to direct everyone's attention to the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy website. When chooseing your next addition on the farm, check over the lists of breeds that are endangered of being "the only one". The ALBC is dedicated to spread awareness about the risk of loosing some of our livestock breeds forever. Large farm operations are mainly interested in raising breeds of livestock that mature quickly, many times these are a hybrid. Many of the heritage breeds which take longer to mature, but have other qualities, are being lost. Breeds on the "Critical" lists are the most in danger. Some of these breeds are totally encompassed on a single farm.
