Iron Oak Farm Goes Dairy!

I am so excited to share this with you! Meet Esther, our beautiful new Alpine dairy goat who is in milk!

After we weaned Purl, our Angora goat who rejected her kid this spring. Zach and I both sort of missed the milking routine. We also talked about how nice it would be to actually get to drink and enjoy some of the efforts of our labors.

We have Nan and Gretta, our two Nubians that we plan to breed this fall. But that would mean we wouldn't be milking for another 6 to 7 months if they kidded in the spring.

So, Esther has come to live with us, and she shares her delicious fresh milk.

She is so sweet, and a wonderful milker, and seems to be settling in nicely. So far, I've made a simple goat cheese, and we've just been enjoying it by the glass or in our coffee. My next venture is to skim the cream and attempt butter. My brain is going a hundred miles an hour thinking of all the delicious things we can do with her milk!
