Intro to Spinning: Plying

So if you've been following along you should have two bobbins full of single ply yarn. To ply these I situate each bobbin on the Lazy Kate by my feet. Then I put a fresh bobbin in the fly, ready to be filled.

Draw up the two strands of yarn.

And remember plying is done counter clockwise, in the opposite direction that the single strand of yarn is spun.

Bring the two strands up to your starter yarn.

And let them intertwine.

After that it's smooth sailing. Plying sort of feeds into the wheel all on it's own.

I wanted to show an example of an area of the yarn that is a little over spun. See how it coils up on itself? Plying will help balance the fiber and straighten areas like this out.

When your done, the bobbin will be full of beautiful 2 ply yarn. This bobbin holds 4 oz.
